Our aims

Overview

Project 108 Schools in Tibet is the result of an international, non profit , grass roots venture of Tibetan exiles and westerners in Sweden and the U.S. to build, renovate, or otherwise support primary schools in the rural areas of Tibet. This project which is the result of years of negotiations, represents one of the very few times that a foreign organisation has been granted permission to build schools inside Tibet.
The majority of our funding was initially granted by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency ( SIDA ), especially in the first and largest project to date situated in the village of Katsel. However, as the mutual vision of the Swedish and U.S. organisations has grown we have tried to locate alternative sources of funding.

Mission & Purpose

The Swedish Tibetan Society for School & Culture (The Swedish Society) with the economical support of The U.S. Tibetan Society for School & Culture (The U.S. Society) has the following mission and purpose:
To participate in an international grass roots effort to build, renovate, or otherwise support 108 primary schools (grade 1-6) in the rural areas of Tibet, and to provide medical care for the students attending the schools.
To preserve Tibetan culture by providing Tibetan children with the ability to read their traditional texts, with education in traditional arts & crafts, and with the skills necessary to be able to participate in the economical and political future of their country.
To open the door for future projects to directly benefit Tibetans within Tibet by demonstrating success of this landmark project.
